Where Reality Meets Possibility
The objective of this challenge is to create a conceptual solution or prototype of how quantum technologies could ensure secure and reliable navigation for defense needs. Teams should propose an innovative idea or demonstration that would allow determining an object's position without GPS (or as a GPS system backup) while ensuring quantum resistance – i.e., protection from threats posed by quantum computers to encryption.
Participants are encouraged to integrate quantum sensors (e.g., next-generation magnetometers, quantum accelerometers, etc.) and post-quantum cryptography or quantum communication methods into a unified vision of a secure navigation system.
System architecture visualization or model showing how a quantum GPS-independent navigation platform with secure communication would look.
Demonstration navigation algorithm combining quantum sensor data with mapping, or quantum-resistant encryption for navigation system components.
Minimal working application or simulation showing quantum sensor navigation or integrated post-quantum encryption protecting transmitted data.
Research justifying the solution's need or benefit – analyzing navigation accuracy achievable with quantum sensors versus conventional ones.
This challenge is interdisciplinary, inviting mixed teams combining knowledge from various fields:
Post-quantum algorithms, encryption system design, risk modeling
Algorithm creation, simulations, data analytics, software prototype development
Understanding quantum sensor operation, quantum mechanics principles application, superposition in navigation
Systems approach: practical sensor integration, technical challenges in defense environments
Alternative navigation methodologies, map correlation with sensor data
Threat scenario identification: GPS blackout, cyber attacks, quantum cryptanalysis dangers
The key is demonstrating how quantum technologies provide added value to security: for example, a navigation system operating even when GPS signals are maliciously jammed, or a communication protocol protected from future quantum attacks. The solution should clearly address the challenge's essence: applying quantum technologies to enhance navigation and communication security.
